Episode 253: Sarah Bessey

I am so happy to welcome Sarah Bessey to the table. I’ve wanted to chat with her for a very long time because she embodies a sense of generosity about her. Her presence welcomes you wherever you are on your faith journey. Sarah is the author of the popular and critically acclaimed books Jesus Feminist, Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith, and Miracles and Other Reasonable Things. Her recent book A Rhythm of Prayer is a New York Times best seller.

Sarah joins me today to talk about faith and prayer. She shares a little bit of her faith journey and how her view of prayer was affected through it. As we open the episode, you get to sample what my Patreon supporters get to hear every week for just $3 a month. Takeaways:

  • Disruption is less trauma and more invitation from God. The wilderness is the place of our greatest intimacy with God. When you lose the answers and the box that you’ve always kept God in, somehow that is an alter. The real temptation is to show up authentically and honestly with yourself.

  • The invitation to inquisitiveness, to wonder, to play can make the slippery slope feel like an adventure rather than something to be scared of.

  • I can parent out of my worst fears or my best hopes.

  • Its important to unlearn things in order to relearn things.

Discussion Questions:

  • What did you find interesting about today’s conversation?

  • In what ways has your faith evolved and what was a catalyst for it?

  • Sarah spoke about how prayer changed for her. What tensions do you feel about prayer? What is something that you found interesting in the way Sarah spoke about it?

  • What is one thing you can do this week based on today’s conversation?
