Takeaways:

  • You have permission to be uncool.

  •  I think that the need to be seen as cool likely drives a lot of what we do and what we don’t do. Because let’s be honest, speaking these opinions out loud, doing some things or not doing other things all fall under the category of vulnerability. That’s because to be vulnerable is to let someone see you—to let yourself be seen, unpopular opinions and all.

  • In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown writes: “When we value being cool and in control over granting ourselves the freedom to unleash the passionate, goofy, heartfelt and soulful expressions of who we are, we betray ourselves. When we consistently betray ourselves, we can expect to do the same to the people we love. When we don’t give ourselves permission to be free, we rarely tolerate that freedom in others.”

  • Push yourself to be silly so that they will feel free to be silly.

  • Push yourself to stand up in your opinion even at the risk of being uncool so that they will be free to do the same.

  • Push yourself to risk showing up as you are in order for them to be free to show up as they are.
