Episode 193: Haley Evans

I am happy to welcome Haley Evans to the table. Haley is a lot like you and me. She works and is a mom spending evenings carting kids around to different activities. She is also a woman who realized that her phone had evolved from a device designed to simplify her life to one that ruled it. So she has committed to not only making changes for herself but hopes to help others do the same. We talk about why she wrote the book Hung Up; how we’ve lost all sense of manners when it comes to our device and how to set up some boundaries with our phones.

Takeaways:

  • Obsessive use of phones with kids leads to increased depression, anxiety and suicide.

  • Until we develop a universal set of socially acceptable etiquette rules, I don’t think this will ever change.

  • If you look at your phone, it takes your brain up to 25 minutes to fully re-engage with what you were doing before.

  • “If I do something good on Instagram and nobody likes it, did it really count?"

  • Stop and think “Is this an appropriate time to contact someone?”

  • Set up a favorites list. Don’t feel the pressure to have your phone on you at all times. Don’t feel the pressure to have answer immediately. Think about the intention around why you post on social.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you feel like you might be addicted to your phone?

  • When is a text more appropriate than an email?

  • How many of your messages are action required?

  • What do you think the etiquette rules for the phone should be?

  • What can you do to create a healthy margin with your phone?
