Episode 163: Dr. Deborah Tillman

Dr. Deborah Tillman joins me today but you may know her best as America’s Super Nanny for Lifetime television. She is a child development and parent educator, speaker, author and founder & CEO of Happy Home Child Learning Centers.

And today, we have such a helpful conversation. It was like Deborah was in my home being super nanny and helping me to the best parent I can be. We talk about how she became America’s Super Nanny, how to handle a strong willed child, how to steer your child in the right direction and how to set boundaries with your kids.

Takeaways From Our Conversation:

  • “We have plans but God has a purpose in our lives.”

  • “When preparation meets opportunity, success shows up.”

  • We must learn to take the pressure off of ourselves as parents.

  • Daily High Fives: wake at 5, centering prayer, exercise, 3 things I’m going to accomplish, 2 things I’m grateful for

  • You have to start with yourself when it comes to parenting a strong willed kid. Then, think about the positive of a strong willed child.

  • “Connect before you correct.”

  • “Respond instead of react.”

  • PARENTS stands for: parents, affirm, raise, educate, nurture, teach, support. That’s our job. Their job is to become more of who they are.

  • At bedtime say to your child: “There’s greatness in you.” And then give a word of who you think he is and then they give a word of who they think they are.

Discussion Questions:

  • If America’s Super Nanny could come to your house, what would you want her to help you with?

  • What pressures do you feel as a parent?

  • Dr. Tillman said, “Connect before you correct.” What would that look like for you?

  • What can help you to not react to your child but instead respond?

  • Let’s name each child and what we’ve noticed about each one that is good.
